About the Horse Show

On November 6, 2019, the TRF and the Blackburn Correctional Complex celebrated 20 years of an extraordinary partnership. The TRF-Blackburn 20th Anniversary Horse Show was an event which “opened the gates” of Blackburn for the Lexington community and Thoroughbred industry to witness the work of the horses and the men who participate in the TRF Second Chances Program – together they are Saving Horses and Saving Lives.

This year, while much has changed, the impact of the TRF Second Chances program has only grown greater. As a result of last year’s Horse Show, numerous local employers have become engaged with the men in the Second Chances Program, interviews have taken place, job offers have been extended, and Second Chances have been granted – as men leaving Blackburn have found employment and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to society upon their release

The TRF herd lives at 18 TRF thoroughbred retirement facilities across the country.

Seven of those farms are “TRF Second Chances Program” farms located at state correctional facilities where inmates participate in a vocational training program in equine care and stable management. At Healing Arenas in California, TRF horses are retrained for adoption and work daily in equine assisted therapy. A number of our retirees also live at private farms whose owners receive a stipend for their care.
