She’s My Type in Ginger Brew

January 4, 2020

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Ghislaine Head’s She’s My Type, four weeks off her debut victory over the same course, returned to the Gulfstream Park turf to spring a 9-1 upset of Saturday’s $100,000 Ginger Brew Stakes.

The ninth running of the 7 ½-furlong Ginger Brew for fillies was the fourth of five stakes for newly turned 3-year-olds worth $450,000 in purses on a Sophomore Showcase program anchored by the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man.

It was the second straight stakes win on the card for jockey Tyler Gaffalione, following the $100,000 Glitter Woman with filly Sound Machine. The winning time was 1:28.12 over a firm course, .13 faster than colt Island Commish ran to win the $100,000 Kitten’s Joy (G3) two races earlier.

Trained by Christophe Clement, She’s My Type ($20.40) rallied from far back to capture her unveiling Dec. 7 in a one-mile maiden special weight triumph over Osaka Girl, who came back to break her maiden by two lengths New Year’s Day.

Gaffalione, aboard for the second straight race, was unhurried early from the far outside post in a field of 11 as Hear My Prayer, off at 17-1, was in front through a quarter-mile in 23.09 seconds, a half in 46.24 and six furlongs in 1:09.61. Gaffalione swung wide on the turn and straightened for home with his sights set on the leader, rolling past inside the sixteenth pole and holding off a late bids from the two favorites, Moral Reasoning and Grade 1 winner Abscond.

“She’s a really talented filly. She overcame a lot today. I didn’t give her the best of trips,” Gaffalione said. “I moved a little early on her. I tried to get out on the turn. I didn’t want to wait too long and get boxed in. She had such a turn of foot and so much raw ability. All the credit goes to Mr. Clement. He’s been telling me for a while how nice she is. She proved it today.”

Moral Reasoning was second with 2-1 top choice Abscond third. Abscond, winner of the one-mile Natalma (G1) over Woodbine’s turf Sept. 15, was attempting to give trainer Eddie Kenneally his second straight victory in the Ginger Brew following Boxwood in 2019.
