REISTERSTOWN, Md.—The Jockey Club released their 2022 Breeding Statistics on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Maryland was one of four states ranked in the top ten states and provinces that showed an increase in foal production, with 498 live foals by Maryland stallions reported through Oct. 8.
The number represents a 3.5% increase from 2021, when 481 foals were reported. In addition to Maryland, three other states in the top 10 reported an increase in live foals: Kentucky (0.9), New York (2.4), and Indiana (5.2). The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported so far is approximately 85-90 percent complete.
In 2022, 744 mares were bred to 26 Maryland stallions. Murmur Farm’s Blofeld was the most prolific stallion, with 61 live foal reports from 86 mares covered.
The following Maryland stallions reported 20 or more live foals in 2023:

• Irish War Cry, Northview Stallion Station (39)
• Uncle Lino, Northview Stallion Station (35)

• Great Notion, Northview Stallion Station (25)
• Long River, Anchor & Hope Farm (23)
In total, the Jockey Club reported that 1,248 stallions covered 28,548 mares during 2022, a decline from the 1,303 stallions who covered 29,065 mares in 2021.
