MaryAnOrGinger a filly by Stong Mandate won in her Hibiscus Stables debut on Sunday at Laurel Park putting in one of the most gutsy performances in recent stable memory and getting up at the wire for the win. Breaking from post 2 MaryAnOrGinger saved ground around the turn, eased off the rail near the quarter pole, aggressively split rivals inside the eighth pole, closed outside Combat Queen under strong riding and was up near the finish.
We spoke with trainer Jeremiah Englehart after the race and Jeremiah said, “I really liked this filly when I had her and that’s why I wanted her back. I had the faith in her that she could win this race at this racetrack. I think she earned the right to try the N2X in New York for the big money. I’m going to give her a well-deserved space between now and the next race.”
We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “Jeremiah called me and advocated for buying this horse privately. I asked him, as I always do, what would be his plan. He said to win the N1X in the Midlantic. He hit the nail on the head. What impressed me most in this race by this filly was the total lack of intimidation splitting through a closing gap then rallying to the wire. That’s the ingredient that many horses don’t have and it separates the winners from the ordinary horses. The partners that just came onboard with her last week were handsomely paid off.”
MaryAnOrGinger earned $23,940 for Sunday’s win.
We’ll see how MaryAnOrGinger comes out of the race and we’ll point the filly accordingly, very possibly to an Allowance N2X in New York with an $84,000 purse.
