Extravagant Kid Makes it Look Easy in 100k Millions Sprint

January 18, 2020

HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – DARRS Inc’s Extravagant Kid, who has been incredibly consistent throughout his career, made it look easy Saturday when he cruised past the favorite and graded-stakes winner Lady’s Island entering the stretch to win the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream Park.

A gelded son of Kiss the Kid trained by Brendan Walsh and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Extravagant Kid covered the six furlongs in 1:10.04 while winning by 2 ¾ lengths. Lady’s Island held on for the place, a half-length in front of Jackson.

It was the 13th career victory for Extravagant Kid, who has finished first or second in 10 of his last 11 starts. Extravagant Kid came into the Millions Sprint off a victory in Gulfstream’s Janus Stakes in December after finishing second in November in the Kennedy Road (G2) at Woodbine.

Breaking alertly away from the gate, Extravagant Kid chased Sugar Swirl (G3) winner Lady’s Island past an opening quarter in :22.01 and a half in :44.41. But around the turn, Extravagant Kid pulled alongside the pacesetting 6-year-old mare before taking the lead for good entering the stretch.

“The race set up pretty much like we thought it would,” Gaffalione said. “[Lady’s Island] went to the lead and set nice fractions for us. I was able to ride off her flank. Coming into the stretch she stopped a little quicker than I thought she would. I was trying not to make the lead too early because he tends to wait around. But he had his mind on business today. All the credit goes to Brendan and the team.”

Extravagant Kid returned $7.

One of the best articles on the state of emergency of our industry. Hits the nail on the head. If we want to save racing we must band together and actively work to save it. If we want the industry to die...we can continue with what we're doing.
