Seven Cal-Bred Fillies to Tussle on Monday
Del Mar Press Release
DEL MAR, Calif.— Seven California-bred fillies, all of them 2-year-olds and all of them winners, will match up on Monday’s Labor Day card at Del Mar in the featured $125,000 Generous Portion Stakes. It will go as Race 10 on an 11-race program.
This will be the 31st running of the race, one of 39 events in the Golden State Series that unfolds over the course of the year at all the major racetracks in California worth a total of $4.85 million. Eight of those races are run during the summer at Del Mar.
The six-furlong dash is headed by Brown or Thabit’s Crazy Hot, a bay Goldencents offspring who is stakes-placed twice already, most recently finishing third in the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar on August 6. She races out of the barn of trainer Jeff Bonde, who is known to have a nice touch with young horses. She’ll also be ridden by old pro Mike Smith as they break from the rail.
Among her rivals are stablemate Fly a Fantasy, who races for the partnership of Harris Farms, Stanton or Wedge, et al. She won smartly going short (four and a half furlongs) in her debut back in April at Santa Anita, then finished fifth in the CTBA in her only other outing. Old pro Kent Desormeaux will handle her.
Also on the Monday card is the fifth and last of the track’s overnight stakes, the $100,000 Tranquility Lake. The mile test for fillies and mares, aged 3 and up, has lured six runners, including a towering favorite in the multiple-stakes winner Fun to Dream, who races for Jill Baffert and Connie Pagler and will be ridden by leading rider Hernandez.
Here’s the full field for the stakes in post-position order with riders:
1. Crazy Hot (Mike Smith, 8/5)
2. Blevys Tiger (Juan Hernandez, 5/2)
3. Unified A.P. (Jose Valdivia, Jr., 8-1)
4. Putt for Dough (Mario Gutierrez, 6-1)
5. Talent for Gold (Giovanni Franco, 12-1))
6. Prancingthruparis (Antonio Fresu, 6-1)
7. Fly a Fantasy (Kent Desormeaux, 5-1)
First post for the holiday card is 1:30 p.m.
