Colonial Creed heads competitive field on the turf in Swingtime Stakes

September 30, 2020

ARCADIA, Calif. — Idle since an impressive winner over the course and distance here on June 14, the Richard Baltas-trained Colonial Creed merits top billing going one mile on turf in Saturday’s $70,000 Swingtime Stakes, which has attracted a competitive field of six fillies and mares aged three and up.

Simon Callaghan’s English-bred Muchly, a gutty allowance winner on Aug. 23, and Tim Yakteen’s highly accomplished Cordiality, both rate big chances as well.

COLONIAL CREED

Owner: Doug Branham, Richard Baltas & Jerry McClanahan

Trainer: Richard Baltas

Third in the Grade II Summertime Oaks and a close fifth in the Grade III Providencia Stakes here at age three, this 4-year-old filly by Jimmy Creed appears ready to deliver her best off the Bench for Baltas in what will be her 12 career start.  A game head one mile turf allowance winner over next-out winner Maxim Rate following a troubled start on June 14, Colonial Creed, who was bred in Kentucky by part owner Branham, has been no worse than second in five out of her six tries at one mile on turf. With Flavien Prat set to rider her back, Colonial Creed looks like the one to beat in the Swingtime.

MUCHLY

Owner: Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners

Trainer: Simon Callaghan

Winless, but competitive in four previous stateside starts, this 4-year-old filled pressed the early pace and prevailed by a neck in a 1 1/16 mile turf allowance under Umberto Rispoli on Aug. 23. With Rispoli out of town to ride at Keeneland over the weekend, Abel Cedillo will get Swingtime call in what will be Muchly’s 15th career start.

CORDIALITY

Owner: Donnie Crevier

Trainer: Tim Yakteen

A gate to wire winner with Rispoli up of the restricted one mile turf Osunitas Stakes two starts back on July 12, this 7-year-old California-bred mare by Papa Clem comes off a close fourth at the same distance in the state-bred Solana Beach Stakes Aug. 15. The leading money earner in the field with $565,135, Cordiality, who was bred in California by Dr. Edward Allred, seeks her fifth stakes win and her 12 overall victory from 33 starts.
