March 7, 2020

ARCADIA, Calif. (March 7, 2020)–With favored Got Stormy a length clear with a sixteenth of a mile to run, Irish-bred River Boyne surged up the rail to take Saturday’s Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile by a neck under Abel Cedillo.  Trained by Jeff Mullins, River Boyne got the mile on turf in 1:33.88.

In his 21st start for Mullins, River Boyne, a 5-year-old full horse by Dandy Man, saved every inch of ground from his number two post position, inching into third position, about a length and a half off of longshot Kingly and multiple Grade I winner Got Stormy approaching the quarter pole.  Turning for home, Got Stormy gained the advantage while Cedillo bided his time and swung outside of the tiring Kingly for a tremendous stretch run.

A handy winner of the Grade III Thunder Road Stakes at a mile on turf here Feb. 8, River Boyne was the second choice at 5-1 and paid $12.00, $5.20 and $3.40.

Owned by Red Baron’s Barn, LLC and Rancho Temescal, River Boyne, a four-time graded stakes winner, notched his first Grade I win today and improved his overall mark to 24-9-5-4.  With the winner’s share of $240,000, he easily eclipsed the $1 million mark, boosting his bankroll to $1,211,918.

As for Got Stormy, the brilliant 5-year-old mare by Stormy Atlantic trained by Mark Casse, she ran too good to lose and in a valiant effort, finished a head clear of late running Next Shares.  Second in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Mile versus males here three starts back on Nov. 2, Got Stormy was the even money favorite against nine older males with Tyler Gaffalione up today and paid $2.80 and $2.40.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Next Shares, who finished three quarters of a length in front of True Valour, was off at 8-1 and paid $5.00 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.15, 46.49, 1:10.27 and 1:22.04.
