Championship Sunday and the Championship Meet

January 19, 2020

Geo Sette is back at it!

It is NFL Championship Sunday,  Why not mix in a full card of great horse racing at Gulfstream Park? Here’s my detailed analysis to provide a guide for your day….. Let’s Go!

Race # 1     Turf Sprint 5 Furlongs Fillies MSW 50,000

# 11 Feeling Funny….…..Filly making her 2nd start, and she’s ben razor-sharp in AM drills, working on the weeds & from the gate for top Mark Casse barn with Irad Ortiz in the silks, this horse sired by American Pharoah cost $875,000.00 as a yearling, she finished 3rd at 7:5 in debut on the dirt,  but with her Dam, this filly is bred to love the lawn, the post position assures some value in betting, best takes this

#10 Coin the Phrase….A hard-hitting filly who is working well and has shown solid speed figures during her first 3 starts and she even raced cs Colts and was favored over them in similar conditions, needs to break well, but I believe she will with P Lopez in the Irons # 4 Screaming By.... She switches from dirt to turf, and cuts back to 5 Furlongs, Jockey Chris Landeros is very capable ( normally win at 10%) but hasn’t won at Gulf meet in 47 tries, but grabbing 4 seconds and 6 third-place finishes, she’s got a quality sire in Speightstown who was an awesome turf sprinter # 7 American Goddess.….nice looking filly making her debut for the Wesley Ward Barn, and draws Johnny V in the saddle, should be a runner, gets Lasix and has been working well. # 8 Choose to be happy.…I must mention this filly who carries the most race experience and had some solid 2nd’s on the turf, but she failed in route last out , must be respected in your gimmicks, she’s got talent

Race # 2  One Mile on the dirt 8000 Claiming Race

# 6 Gran Grayfrost.…this colt is proven at the distance and comes in for solid connections ( Barboza/Torres) should show decent tactical speed, stay close for 6/8ths and then fire his best in the final quarter…

# 3 Lawyer Drill..…starts out of solid Stanley Gold barn, he’s run some of his best races over the Gulfstream strip.,he should show nice speed and is capable of leading this group as far as he goes, a threat at his best # 4  Mysterio ….. he loves the distance and he’s dropping in class for this, he needs a moderate to fast pace to mount his best close, not sure he’ll get it, even still he’s capable of a strong close to grab a share of this purse. #  2 Enkidu…..he smashed a PA restricted field, but now faces a firmer test in open company,  he’s been feast or famine regarding his starts too, either very good or very bad…watch the board as he eased in his last and now shows a decent work for this race.

Race # 3  Maiden Claimer 12,500 Tag going One Mile

# 8 Mount Mitchell…. Ships in for solid Ken McPeek barn after facing faster maidens at Churchill  & Keenland, drops into a tag here and they add blinkers for this race, expecting an off the pace strong close to boss this cheaper field.

# 3 Looking at Roses....Ortiz up for Danny Gargan,  this gelding also raced with better & shows the best Beyer speed rating in the field, he drops for this race & is working well, there’s no doubt he’ll get window support and they are taking off his blinkers as he didn’t respond well to the change last time., he can be tactical or close strong, a versatile player who could take it all. # 5 StarShip Fonzy....comes off his best race finishing 2nd at this same distance, must be respected off of that, but my top 2 are simply classier  # 10 Fast Fairy…..this guy has been well-traveled and showed some promise vs better in Canada, now they take him off the turf for this, he’s bred for the distance and could improve at a big price. # 2 Vinestone... he raced well in his last at this same level, worth a mention especially if any of my top selections scratch

Race # 4  Turf Mile, MSW for 50,000 3-year-old fillies.

# 12 Cat Lady.... Classy bred filly by Kittens Joy, trained by Todd Pletcher and gets the great Irad Ortiz in the silks….also makes her debut with lasix, works are ok, not super fast, but steady.  thinking she may get 4-1 or better due to the 12 post, but she can make amends with a smart ride, look for a powerful close as they turn for home.

# 8 Highland Glory....makes 3rd start, now moves to turf after two solid tries on the soil at Belmont & Saratoga, comes from solid turf barn and gets rider switch to P Lopez who is good on the weeds especially with a horse like this who should show tactical speed.  is working well & around the dogs which show that shes fresh and fit for first race since October.  # 3  Three Flamingo’s, Great turf pedigree and has 3 straight solid mile tries on the turf, improving with her speed rating in each.  she’s also been working around the dogs and gets Saez who’s very aggressive while riding on horses like this,  expecting additional improvement  # 7 Sylvanella....Filly makes her debut for a solid barn and gets lasix,  Connections have won at first asking many times in this spot, watch the board and respect in gimmicks # 13 Pythagoren….is listed as an also eligible,  and will draw in the race if there’s a scratch if so, she’s capable of a powerful close as she loves the weeds++Note  Concerned about # 5 Memphis Showboat, I like her works and has the pedigree,  need to see her on the track

Race # 5  One Mile 12,500 Claiming Race  Colts & geldings

# 4 Zippy…… Comes of solid race at today’s distanced and claimed by David Fawkes who has one of the better Gulfstream barn. has the tactical speed to be in this all the way, can take lead or sit 2nd or 3rd and fire best in the stretch, also has a good rider in Tyler G

 # 2 Seemee.... ships in from Canada and synthetic surface but gets J Ortiz in the saddle and is sired by Verrazano who he should like the soil, also descends to career-low in class. dangerous on best  # 6 Krachenwagen…..also ships in from Canada from a winning barn, drops in class, but needs a fast pace to close into as he’s not the best of starters…# 5 Third Army....likes the distance and comes off a solid win, they should be going for a bigger purse so I’m curious as to why they remain at this level, watch the board for an indication as he is proven as the mile distance

Race # 6  One Mile on the  Fillies Turf MSW 50,000

# 8 Pearlescent....filly makes her first start since July 2019 at Saratoga where she ran well , even though bumped twice after being well bet in debut, finishing 4th this Bill Mott trained filly gets Johnny V in the saddle, her works say she’s ready and the three horses that beat her at Saratoga all came back to win, I’m expecting support at the window and a strong close as they come down the lane in the stretch.

# 4 Tomorra…..She broke from the 11 hole in her debut in a field of 12 and was bumped and forced 5 wide, today she gets a much better rider and a significantly better post, look for a sharp break to set up a nice position strike, also from a winning barn ( 29%) # 9 Veer..… filly makes her debut with the pedigree that screams the distance and the turf,  steady works show she may fire at first asking….# 6 Duchess of Sussex....showed a high rate of speed but then tired in her debut, she should get out again, but feel she’ll be pressed and may tire again, If others dont go out with her, then watch out…..should be used in triples in case she lasts longer.

Race # 7  One Mile Turf 16,000 Claimers for older colts and geldings four years old and up

# 7 Hot and Heavy....owns consistent and reliable turf form, 14 for 22 in the money and 12 of 17 in the money at this distance, has a tactical advantage as he typically sits 2nd or 3rd for the first 1/2 mile and then fire his best not worrying about traffic.  Edge in a very competitive field on paper.

# 12 River Evangelist....he makes his first start at Gulfstream but is from winning barn that does well in spots like this and picks up Paco Lopez, he also has a nice work for this race and I’m expecting him to be flying in the stretch if Paco gives him a quality ride.# 5 Flow Motion.….this veteran loves the turf and is 8 for 13 lifetime at the distance, picks up a positive rider switch to Irad and is aslo capable of a powerful close in the stretch, he could be dangerous on his best race # 3 Til The End…  This guy is also consistent and reliable on the turf and at the distance, the last two were really good so I’m wondering why his connections aren’t going for a bigger purse,  he can be first or last….. I actually hope he scratches so I need not worry, but if he’s in, he must be respected #10 National Honor , he comes from a good barn ( Jane Cibelli) and is working well for first race since late November, 7 different jockeys in his last 7 races, can close well but is hard to handle

Race # 8   Six Furlong dirt sprint Claiming for 8,000  four years old and up

# 5  Cabre,,,,, Tough, hard hitter from good consistent connections, steps up a little, but can blast these with his best effort, expecting him to hit 2nd behind the main speed and then take over in the stretch, and lead them down to the wire. he may get dismissed at 4-1 as I feel a few others will be bet in the race

# 10 Sighted....has been running evenly,  but he’s got the talent to be a menacing closer in the stretch at a big price,  perhaps part of a $200+ exacta….Opportunity here # 2 Rayo My King.…has solid speed to be a factor and based on his Beyers he will no doubt get interest at the windows, must be used in gimmicks, exactas and triples  and superfectas # 1 Follow His Foot Steps....  his last was smashing, winning by 5 and now claimed by solid barn, but I feel he’ll be 8:5 or better and can regress of that effort, a risky favorite here

Race # 9 Allowance 51,000 going a Mile and a sixteenth on the Turf….

# 3 Largent.…Saez up for Pletcher hasn’t run since last May 2019, but the recently Gelded him and has been working him brilliantly, he’s got high speed and I’m expecting him to potentially wire the field or allow a bug/rabbit to seize the lead, tire, and close on him, watch the board for action, this is a nice horse

# 8 Kadar….. solid turf connections with a top pilot on board with Ortiz, he’s a slow starter, but his pedigree screams powerful close and he’s done it a few times already,  he’ll be flying in the stretch. # 7 Bourbon in May....Seasoned Turfer who also closes powerfully and he gets Javiar Castellano in the silks, he could be right there at the wire with his best effort. # 2 Conviction Trade….Bred to love the turf, he won his debut but disappointed in his last 2, cost $275,000 as a yearling and he’s got greater expectations

Race # 10 Restricted Florida Bred Fillies  6 Furlong Sprint Opt 16,000 Claiming

# 8 Sayonara Baby….  The main speed with an outside draw and Saez,  feel she’ll make the lead and could possibly go wire to wire, needs a good break, confident Saez will be ready for it.

# 7 Royal Mistress…...she was outrun vs the Boys, and open company, now back with state-bred fillies, should show tactical speed and will make a run at the leader in the stretch,  Blinkers come off as well & Christian Torres can flat out ride. # 3 Tale of Success.…Johnny V will be up for a productive barn, drops back down to a claimer and back with State Breds, she will be flying late if there’s a rapid pace of .46 or less.# 5 Let’s Be Honest…..Nice works coming into this race & switch to Castellano is very appealing, I feel she prefers it wet, but there’s talent here and she should not be totally dismissed. # 1 Afrolina.….worthy of a mention for deeper gimmicks at a huge price,  shes back with state breds and does have nice speed with rail post,  perhaps she fills a big Superfecta.

Race # 11  Turf, One Mile and a Sixteenth Fillies MSW 50,000

# 8  Empire Moon…… This could be bombs away!  This filly makes her 2nd start for a solid barn after having a horrible trip in her debut where she jumped the start and then was bumped, I love her works and the equipment change to blinkers… I’m hoping she gets ignored at the windows, feeling she can run this field down with a powerful stretch run, a potential $25.00+ mutual,  One of the best values of the day

# 2 In Front..…Draws inside post with solid tactical speed, almost assure her contention throughout the race, J Ortiz in the saddle adds to her appeal, likely to hit the board, do not ignore. # 6 Elle M’Souri.... Looks fresh and fit for first race since early November, has shown a willingness to run in all 3 starts at three different tracks, and switch to Tyler Gaffalione adds to her appeal,  expecting a strong close as well. # 1 North Broadway....Makes her debut for Chad Brown with Johnny V up, with Lasix and decent works,  great expectations for this gal with a $750,000 price tag, I like my top 3 more, but you simply cannot allow this horse to beat you,  use in your gimmicks
