2YO Maiden Special Weight ‘Sum Up and Learnings’ – 07/10/2023

July 10, 2023

For the Week of: 07/03/2023 through 07/09/2023

By 2YO EdgeMan

She’s Fire lives up to her name (NYRA/Coglianese)

BEL2:070723 – First-Crop Sire – Flameaway – notched his second winner today in this one as #3 She’s Fire was spectacular in winning with plenty to spare. She was off a half a step slow, but quickly got her feet securely under her and moved quickly to grab the lead. Our pick – #4 Permed – gave chase through out but was no match for the winner who finished in a brisk 1:09.21 over the six furlongs on turf, logging a 77 E-Speed Fig (which I thought would be higher). The winner set some swift fractions, too – 22.17, 45.25, and 57.00 – and scored by 2 ½ easy lengths on the wire. She returned $11.20 to her $2W backers. Learnings – The spritely, four-furlong breeze that she put in less than a week ago at PID apparently showed that she was ready to roll – the move to Jose Ortiz also meant that he was serious, too. Kevin Rice clearly moves up from his good work with this filly.

Magic Cross uber-impressive on debut (NYRA/Coglianese)

BEL1:070823 – #1 Sugar N Spice blasted out of the gate and opened a quick two length lead and set fractions of 22.34 and 46.78 while she led the way to near the head of the stretch before being mowed down in the three path by Jose Lezcano and Bill Mott’s ‘other horse’ – #2 Magic Cross – who went on to score by over seven lengths. She lit up the tote board for those that had trust with a payout of $33.20 for every $2W ticket. Her final time was 1:06.17 for the 5 ½ furlongs which resulted in a strong 83 EBSF. Our pick – #3 Exhilarate – didn’t do any running early and only had two other fillies beat while trailing the lead by about 10 lengths before making a solid run in the lane to just get beat out of place money by another fast closer – #5 Dorothy’s Dream. Learnings – 15/1 odds seemed reasonable, other than her sire – Good Magic – who sends out runners. Additionally, her one brisk, 4f work over at Saratoga was impressive, but again, nothing to really flag a race like this from this firster.

You know what happens Thursday – yep, da Spa!  We are gearing up big for opening day so keep your eyes on ‘PasttheWire.com as we’ll be filling it up with great info on our wonderful two-year-old Maidens. Thanks, and start getting fired up!

This is so beautifully written; You bought a horse and took him to a farm moved me. Bless You.
