Ellis Park, Race 6 – Thursday, July 4, 2024
By The 2YO EdgeMan
ELP6:070424 – 5 1/2f on the Dirt. 16 fillies are entered – 12 will start. The number of FTSers = 10 and there are two with one start.
#1 – Quinn’s Promise (12/1) – Trainer Dale Romans has had 10 winners at this meet at Ellis over the past five years in 46 of our races (21.7%, ROI = $2.09). This FTS filly was sired by First-Crop sire, Promises Fulfilled, and she’s a homebred. Her Tiznow dam was 2/14 with $25,000 earned and she’s thrown one other foal that’s unraced. Dale has sent her out for nine morning works (34 furlongs) and the last seven have been at a half mile, but none of her times have been anything flashy. Martin Chuan, who rode a winner at this level for Romans last week at CD, will take the reins.
#5 – Volatile Market (6/1) – As you’d likely guess from her name, this filly is by another Newby sire – Volatile – and she’s prepped by Steve Asmussen (M = 15/148, 10.1%; FTS = 6/92, 6.5%). Mom, whose stallion was Gemologist, banked just north of $100K on the track by going 3/11, including a win first out at two in a MCL at CD in June – this is her first foal. In the sales ring, today’s runner, making her first start, didn’t meet her reserve price of $37,000 as a weanling, but did hammer for $110K last year as a yearling (31/99). She comes into her first competition today with only five works under her, totaling 22 furlongs, but that does include her last at 5/8th of a mile. None of her drill times jump off the page. Steve will give Kentucky Derby winning jockey, Brian Hernandez Jr., the leg up.
#10 – Summer Travels (9/2) – Norm Casse (M = 3/20, 15.0% FTS = 1/16, 6.3%) will cinch the girth under this FTS filly by Freshman sire, Authentic (Spendthrift Farm). Her dam was victorious one time in her racing days in the six starts that she made, but that only amounted to $7,000 in purse money. She’s tossed three others of racing age. This gal was a big hit in the auction ring as she sold for $475K as a yearling (15/92). 23 furlongs of base have been laid in the mornings by way of six drills. Two back, on 6/20/24, she went 4f in 48.4 from the gate (4/22). Richardo Santana, Jr. will be her pilot for the day.
#11 – Bread to Run (5/1) – This firster is the second Authentic starter is conditioned by Rodolphe Brisset (M = 4 of 42, 9.5%). His unraced dam has produced six others of racing age – one of them was a gelding who earned nearly $1/2 million by winning three of 17 races, including his second outing while still a 2YO at SA in December (94 EBSF) and also capturing a G2 later in his career. Eight works, amounting to 30 furlongs, is the prep that this gal has put in. Her effort two back, on 6/20/24, was a five panel bullet – 1:01.0 flat (1/13). Florent is set to be her guide.
#12 – Mrs Worldwide (5/2 ML Fav) – One of the two with experience will start from the far outside and she’s a Florida-bred by First-Crop sire, Global Campaign. Her mare (by Scat Daddy) won her fourth start in August of her two-year-old campaign right here at ELP. She’s tossed two others – one that was 6/22 with purse winnings of $272K. Today’s competitor ran her only race at CD on 6/7/24 and after a bump at the start, she ran third, beaten by 4 ¼ lengths. Back in March at Ocala as a 2YO, she received a final bid from Boardshorts Stables for $100K (8/42). Trainer Brian Lynch (M – 1/29, 3.5%) has been able to get two works into her since her last run – she blitzed her half mile spin on 6/20, going in 46.4 (1/99). James Graham gets the return riding assignment.
Final Analysis – I think the ML fav (#12) is vulnerable, especially starting on the far outside. My pick is #10 Summer Travels even though she’s starting further out than I’d prefer. This gal has been working nicely and Norm Casse certainly knows his way to the Winner’s Circle in these races. Authentic is likely to start heating up this summer and I think that he’s got a good chance to notch another winning offspring today.
Lots more baby racing here at Ellis over the next few days as they’ve carded one affair on Friday and two more on Saturday. So, keep checking www.PastTheWire.com often and I’ll be sure to keep you fully informed on these wonderful two-year-old races. Thank you!
