South Florida to Represent in Arkansas Derby Double

April 28, 2020

Horses training in South Florida will be well represented in the split divisions of next Saturday’s Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn.

Gouverneur Morris, who finished fourth in the March 29 Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park, drew into the first of two $500,000 divisions. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the son of 2013 Florida Derby winner Constitution finished second last year in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland.

Pletcher will also be represented in the second division by Farmington Road (Quality Road), who trained at Palm Beach Downs prior to finishing second in the April 24 Oaklawn Stakes

King Guillermo, the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner owned by ex-Major Leaguer Victor Martinez, is prominent among the entries for the second division. The Juan Carlos Avila-trained son of Uncle Mo is stabled at Gulfstream Park. King Guillermo broke his maiden on turf at Gulfstream Park West last fall before finishing third in the Pulpit Stakes over Gulfstream’s turf course Nov. 30.
