OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) will observe a moment of silence following Thursday’s fifth race at Aqueduct Racetrack to honor the memory of Juan Becerra, an exercise rider for trainer Steve Asmussen who passed away on Monday.
The 43-year-old Becerra lost consciousness while exercising a horse on the Belmont Park training track on Friday morning and fell from his mount. He was transported to Winthrop Hospital where he was placed on life support, but did not recover.
Becerra is remembered as a joyful, hard-working individual who had a passion for working with horses.
“Juan Becerra was a beloved member of the New York racing community who always had time to share his knowledge and help others. Horses were his passion. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues,” said Reverend Humberto Chavez, Chaplain for NYRA racetracks.
NYRA’s horsemen and the racing community will observe a moment of silence following Thursday’s fifth race at the Aqueduct finish line. Post time for Thursday’s fifth race is 2:17 p.m. Eastern.
“Our hearts and condolences go out to Juan’s family and friends. He was a greatly respected member of our team who was dedicated to his family and to the horses in our care,” said Toby Sheets, assistant trainer to Steve Asmussen.
Becerra is survived by his wife Karen and their three children.

A memorial for Becerra will be held on Monday, November 18 from 7-9 p.m. at Elmont Funeral Home located at 1529 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont, N.Y.
