British Filly Continues to Thrive in North America
BERKELEY, Calif.— 4-year-old filly Natural Colour picked up her second career stakes victory on Saturday at Golden Gate Fields in the marquee race of the afternoon, the $50,000 Golden Gate Fields Turf Distaff for fillies and mares 3-years-old and upward.
Natural Colour, who was purchased by owners Ron Charles and Samuel Gordon for $24,233 out of the 2022 February Tattersalls Sale in Europe, brushed with a rival at the start, was able to make up ground quickly, and sat in a stalking position for the first three-quarters of the race. On the far turn, she inched closer to early leader and stablemate Northwest Factor, took the lead at the furlong pole, and held off a late charge from runner-up finisher Charges Dropped. The top two were well clear of Northwest Factor, who held third, followed by Tiz an Edventure, Strike at Dawn, Sassyserb, Misty Cat, Tam’s Little Angel and Ellamira.
Natural Colour, who went off as the 4-5 post time favorite, paid $3.80 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Charges Dropped returned $3.00 to place and $2.60 to show, and third-place finisher Northwest Factor paid $5.80 to show. Natural Colour stopped the clock for one mile and a sixteenth over firm turf in 1:44.47 while finishing three-quarters of a length ahead of Charges Dropped for the victory. Winning jockey Pedro Terrero navigated Natural Colour for trainer Manny Badilla, who also saddled third-place finisher Northwest Factor.
Since moving to North America, Natural Colour has won four races from five starts, including the Golden Gate Distaff and the Luther Burbank Stakes at Santa Rosa. Bred in Great Britain by Safiyna Partnership, Natural Colour sports a lifetime record of 5 wins, 2 seconds, and 1 third-place finish from 14 starts. Her career earnings sit at $129,105.
