Shooters Shoot Makes Turf Debut In Lure; Greener Pastures After Anoakia Stakes?

ARCADIA, Calif. – Medina Spirit, first-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby and dominating front-running winner by five lengths in Santa Anita’s Grade I Awesome Again Stakes on Oct. 2, breezed six furlongs this morning for the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 6 in a work pretty much obfuscated by darkness and fog.

Under former jockey Juan Ochoa, on Santa Anita’s official work tab the bargain son of Protonico trained by Bob Baffert was given a six-furlong clocking of 1:13, but private clocker and bloodstock agent Gary Young recorded a five-furlong move.

“I got 59 and four,” said Young, who has a vested interest in Medina Spirit since he recommended purchase of the Florida-bred to owner Amr Zedan for $35,000 at a two-year-old in training sale at Ocala in 2020.

“You can see fine now (8:15 a.m.) but you couldn’t see him when he worked. It was dark but I think the times are close enough,” Young said. “He looked good doing it.”

Shooters Shoot Tries Turf For First Time In Lure

Shooters Shoot makes his turf debut and his first start in two months Saturday when he faces five rivals in the $70,000 Lure Stakes for three-year-olds and up at a mile.

Neptune’s Storm, with a plausible record of class since he is coming off 12 graded races in his last 14 starts, looms a prohibitive Lure favorite for trainer Peter Miller.

“He doesn’t have a tremendous amount of pedigree that says he’s going to love grass,” said Shooters Shoot’s conditioner, Peter Eurton, “but he’s worked well on the training track and sometimes that’s conducive to a tighter race track.

“He’s doing well and he drew well, so we’ll see how it goes.

“You never know when it comes to a surface. He didn’t like the track at Charles Town (finishing seventh in the restricted $150,000 Russell Road on the main track at seven furlongs Aug. 27). He got in behind horses and the kickback was not his cup of tea.”

Shooters Shoot is a four-year-old Kentucky-bred gelded son of Competitive Edge out of the Bernardini dam Repeat. He has a 3-2-1 record from 14 starts with earnings of $185,380.

Callaghan Sees Turf In Filly’s Future

Shes Bout a Mover moves up a notch in Sunday’s $75,000 Anoakia Stakes after a front-running debut win at Los Alamitos on Sept. 17, but Simon Callaghan sees turf in her future.

“I think she’ll make the transition from one track to the other,” the trainer said. “It’s probably not the toughest race, but we’ve got to see where we’re at, and this is a filly that could run on turf in the future.

“First we’ll see how we do on the main track in the Anoakia, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we try turf down the road.”

Shes Bout a Mover is a daughter of Mastery out of the Belong to Me dam Dowry bred in Kentucky by The Neuman Group, LLC. Her owner is James Branham.

For two-year-old fillies at six furlongs, the Anoakia goes as race eight of nine with a 1 p.m. first post time:

1. Eda, Flavien Prat, 4-5

2. Lady T, Victor Espinoza, 4-1

3. Cadillac Margarita, Wayne Barnett, 30-1

4. Benedict Canyon, Abel Cedillo, 4-1

5. Shes Bout a Mover, Juan Hernandez, 5-2
