Maximum Security Beats the Heat, Baffert in Haskell

July 21, 2019

Maximum Security was able to rate off the speed and sustain a strong rally to take the Win and You’re in Haskell earning a guaranteed start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Mucho Gusto, Bob Baffert’s starter, launched a strong rally and looked like he might take the whole thing under Joe Talamo but had to settle for second as Maximum Security was dead game and would not be denied. Trainer Jason Servis was non committal after the race when asked if his colt would head to the Travers next. He expressed concern about coming back too quickly off a hard race in such hot weather and indicated he’d watch how his charge would come out of the race.

There was a touch of controversy in the Haskell 2019 as the stewards put up the inquiry sign and Maximum Security’s number blinked. King For a Day under John Velazquez checked hard from the rail around and dropped out of contention around the far turn. It appeared Maximum Security came in causing tightening or worse but the number stood. John Velazquez appeared frustrated with the decision of the stewards in his post race interview with TVG who was on site. The incident did happen at a point in the race where it was very difficult to see how much Maximum Security came in if at all under Luis Saez.
