Jakarta Pounds the Dirt to Take Her First Stakes in Powder Break

May 18, 2020

Three Diamonds Farm’s Jakarta, stretching out for the first time in 11 career starts and first in a stakes, dug in after being headed by multiple graded-stakes winner Valedictorian in the stretch and edged clear for an 11-1 upset in Saturday’s $75,000 Power Break at Gulfstream Park.

The Powder Break for fillies and mares 3 years old and up, originally carded for the grass, was moved to the main track after overnight rain but remained at one mile. Jakarta ($24.60) completed the distance in 1:36.37 over the fast main track to extend her win streak to three races with a 2 ¼-length victory.

Moved to trainer Mike Maker for her 5-year-old season, Jakarta debuted with a front-running optional claiming triumph going five furlongs on the turf March 18 at Gulfstream. Jockey Edgard Zayas had her forwardly placed again in the Powder Break from Post 2, posting fractions of 23.26 and 46.30 seconds, pressed to her outside by 2-1 favorite W W Fitzy.

W W Fitzy began to drop back on the turn as Valedictorian picked up the chase outside Jakarta, forging a short lead after going six furlongs in 1:10.48. Zayas kept busy on Jakarta along the rail and the Bustin Stones mare surged again as Bella Ciao came flying late to edge Valedictorian for second.

Stakes winner Valiance, previously undefeated in three starts but unraced since June 2019, finished fourth, followed by W W Fitzy, Goodbye Brockley and Great Sister Diane. Grade 1-winning millionaire Got Stormy was scratched when the race was taken off the turf.

“I knew she was going to be on the lead; it was a matter of if they let her go comfortable enough that she could hold on,” Zayas said. “She fought back. At the three-eighths pole she got a little pressure, and I thought at the quarter pole she was about to be done and I started riding her and she kept digging in. It was an off-the-turf race and a lot of horses didn’t finish, and she got lucky.”
