Irish-bred Thrumps Dream nips the competition by a nose

April 18, 2022

ARCADIA, Calif. – In a gutty effort, the Richard Baltas-trained Thrumps Dream, a 4-year-old Irish-bred filly, held off the late charge of Carpe Vinum to take Sunday’s $72,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by a nose. Ridden for the first time by Joe Bravo, Thrumps Dream notched her second consecutive win over the course, getting one mile on turf in 1:33.89.

Next to last about five lengths off the lead leaving the half mile pole, Thrumps Dream moved into contention around the far turn, swung four-wide turning for home and took command leaving the furlong marker to just prevail on the wire.

Off as the 9-5 favorite in a field of seven older fillies and mares, Thrumps Dream paid $5.80, $3.20 and $2.60.

“I went into this race with a lot of confidence, and she kicked underneath me wonderfully,” said Bravo, who notched his second win on the day and would go on to get the hat trick in the next race. “But wow, I didn’t know if we won that photo or not. I give Abel’s (Cedillo, aboard Carpe Vinum) filly a lot of credit. She was closing strong, but I’m just glad we got the head bob today.”

Owned by Carroll Boys Racing, Harlow Stables, LLC, Christopher Dunn, Michael Iavarone and Jerry McClanahan, Thrumps Dream now has two wins and a third-place finish from four stateside starts with Baltas. With the winner’s share of $43,200, she increased her earnings to $107,366 and ran her overall mark to 6-3-1-1.

Trained by Phil D’Amato, Carpe Vinum made a swooping five-wide move off the turn and just missed in a huge effort. Off at 5-1, she paid $5.20 and $3.40 while finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of Charges Dropped.

The second choice at 5-2 with Juan Hernandez up Charges Dropped, who made a narrow lead approaching the eighth pole, finished 1 ¾ lengths in front of Heathers Grey and paid $2.80 to show.

Fractions on the race were 22.67, 46.85, 1:10.81 and 1:22.38.

Santa Anita will take a brief hiatus from live racing next week and will return in full force on Saturday, April 30, as four graded stakes will highlight what promises to be an outstanding card.

Simulcast wagering will be offered, with free parking and admission next Thursday through Sunday, as well as Thursday, April 27 and Friday, April 28. Wagering will be offered each day beginning at 10 a.m. in the Grandstand Paddock Room and at Sirona’s Sports Bar.
