Champion mare Enable was upset by Waldgeist in her try at an unprecedented third Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe win.
Under Frankie Dettori Enable sat fourth a good part of the way looking poised as ever. With about 600 meters to the finish Dettori asked the champion and she responded opening about 4 or 5 lengths on the field and it appeared she was going to make history. At that point PC Boudot swung Waldgeist out for a clear run and he exploded collaring Enable late and won going away by a length and a half or two lengths.
It was a thrilling rendition of the Arc, and both John Gosden and Andre Fabre did fantastic jobs having their runners set for their best race. Waldgeist had been beaten by Enable three times in the past including last year’s Arc when he had less than an ideal trip. He certainly picked a good time to turn the tables and redeem himself. Enable ran a great race, good enough to win many stakes and if you had to nit pick the loss, perhaps Frankie pressed the button a tad early. The way she was traveling you can’t really fault him and the way Waldgeist finished it may not have mattered.
