Rajiv Maragh: One of The Best To Hail From Jamaica

September 28, 2019

The son of a Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh comes from a family of horsemen. Born in 1985 in Jamaica when he became old enough, he chose to ride horses himself as a professional race rider. He rode his first winner at Tampa Bay Downs, in February of 2003. He really became popular and had his big break when he was 14th on the earnings list in 2008.

Rajiv Maragh rapidly climbed the ranks and moved his tack north to the NYRA racing circuits where he really began to earn the most money in his profession. He rode his first grade 1 winner in 2009. He is a four-time Breeders Cup winner, winning the Breeders Cup dirt mile, Juvenile sprint and the Filly and Mare sprint twice.

In 2015 Rajiv Maragh was seriously injured in a spill where he was thrown from a horse in mid race. The remarkable thing about it was the severity of his injuries. He was lucky to be alive much less walk again. In November of 2016 Rajiv defied all odds and not only was he ambulatory again, he resumed riding if you can believe it. In 2017 Rajiv moved his tack to California to try his hand at riding races on the West Coast. Although he had a tough time breaking into the California circuit Rajiv was honored that year with the Jockey 360 Comeback Rider of the year.

Nelson Arroyo was his agent during this stint and amazingly enough was the 3rd Comeback Rider Nelson had represented 3 years in a row. As of this date Rajiv Maragh has close to fifteen thousand mounts with 1885 Winners. Rajiv has over one hundred million in earnings to date. Some of the notable winners he has ridden are the likes of Groupie Doll, Caleb’s Posse, Wicked Strong, Irish War Cry and Tizway to name a few.

@jonathanstettin Your article re reading when a horse dead on board made me some $ just now. Untapable was, IMO, odds-on, but dead. TY!
