MELBOURNE, Vic., AU—The legacy of two of the greatest Australian Thoroughbreds of our generation will burn even brighter as they are both elevated to Legend status at the upcoming Australian Racing Hall of Fame Ceremony in Brisbane on 31 August.
The stage is set to honour Winx and Black Caviar, the champion mares who defined greatness, whose unmatched brilliance lifted racing to unparalleled heights.
In the words of trainer, Peter Moody “They are both great mares and it was only a matter of time, with all due respect, they were both going to get that honour and deservedly so”.
Chris Waller, trainer of champion mare Winx reflected on her greatness saying “I always admired Winx’s determination and the uncomplicated way she went about her work and racing. She didn’t require any extra fuss. When I talk to people about Winx, there’s nothing but the ultimate respect for her. It is fitting she has been elevated to Legend Status”.
Black Caviar, the sprinting powerhouse and undefeated winner of 25 races including 15 at Group 1 level, was originally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013. Her flawless career included two TJ Smith Stakes, three Lightning Stakes, two VRC Champion sprints and eclipsed it all with her 2012 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
In a delightful coincidence, Moody will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the same ceremony as his equine marvel. He poignantly added “Black Caviar changed my life. Every day, I still think about her and then when Royal Ascot comes around you relive those great memories again”.

Winx, in her breathtaking and herculean effort won all of her last 33 races and in doing so, captured the hearts of the nation and beyond. “She was a high-performance athlete with an amazing amount of talent. She captured the imagination of everyone, here and around the world” said Waller.
Winx, originally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017 won an extraordinary four Cox Plates, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes, four George Ryder Stakes, four Chipping Norton Stakes and many other Group One races multiple times including the Turnbull Stakes, the George Main Stakes, the Winx Stakes named in her honour in 2018 and aptly, her first Group 1 was the Queensland Oaks.
Australian Racing Hall of Fame Chairman, Jason Scott echoed the sentiments of the entire Hall of Fame judging committee saying “Debate has raged for years over which of the two champion mares is the greatest we’ve seen, however what is certain is that their legacies transcend far beyond the boundaries of racing.” Mr Scott added ‘It’s deserving that they both be bestowed “Legend” status in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame together, befitting of their stature as two of the best we have and will ever have the good fortune to see”.
Paul Eriksson, CEO Racing Australia:
“We congratulate the connections of these two wonderful mares, Winx and Black Caviar. Their outstanding equine feats have thrilled racegoers and inspired generations with their once-in-a-lifetime winning streaks. It is only fitting that they be elevated to Legend status, and we look forward to what will be an incredible event in Brisbane.”
Racing Queensland will host the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and Racehorse of the Year at “The Star” in Brisbane, 31 August 2025.
