Violence Colt Brings $220,000 to Top Wednesday at Keeneland

LEXINGTON, Ky.— A colt by Violence from the family of Grade 2 winner Nicole H sold for $220,000 to James Zahler to headline Wednesday’s ninth session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Consigned by Woods Edge Farm (Peter O’Callaghan), agent, the colt is out of the Sharp Humor mare One Hot Senorita.

A total of 329 yearlings sold through the ring Wednesday for $12,969,000, for an average of $39,419 and a median of $30,000. Session results were comparable to 2021’s ninth session when 325 horses sold through the ring for $12,929,500, for an average of 39,783 and a median of $30,000.

The 329 yearlings is a Keeneland record for number of horses sold through the ring during a single session. Today’s clearance rate was 90 percent.

Cumulatively, 2,180 yearlings have sold through the ring for $389,605,000, an increase of 14.69 percent over the same period last year when 2,125 horses sold through the ring for $339,691,500. Average price of $178,718 is up 11.80 percent from $159,855 in 2021, while the median of $100,000 is 11.11 percent above last year’s $90,000. 

This year’s sale has 12 sessions compared to 11 sessions in 2021.

Manfred and Penny Conrad purchased a son of Army Mule from the family of Queen’s Plate winner Midnight Aria for $200,000. Denali Stud, agent, consigned the colt, who is out of Midnight Embrace, by Midnight Lute.

A filly by Uncle Mo out of Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) winner Life Is Sweet sold for $170,000 to Mathiesen Racing. Consigned by Lane’s End, agent, the filly is also from the family of champion Sweet Catomine.

Red Wings paid $160,000 for a colt by Not This Time from the family of European champion Culture Vulture and Grade 2 winner Santa Catarina. The colt is out of Purrfect Song, by Unbridled’s Song, and is a half-brother to stakes winner B. B. Dude. He was consigned by Sally Thomas agent.

Gainesway was the day’s leading consignor, selling 23 yearlings for $1,166,000.

Grassroots Training and Sales spent $375,000 for 10 yearlings to be the day’s top buyer.
