Union Rags Colt Tops Opening Day at Ocala Breeders’ Sale

Hip No. 4, a son of Union Rags consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds, Agent, went to Blue Sky Stables for $165,000 to top the Consignor Preferred Session and first day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2020 Winter Mixed Sale. The dark bay or brown yearling colt, a half brother to stakes winner Ginger N Rye, is out of La Milanesa, by Mr. Greeley, a half sister to graded stakes winner Bowman’s Band.

Bill & Corinne Heiligbrodt paid $135,000 for Hip No. 64, a yearling daughter of Liam’s Map consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent. The gray or roan filly is out of Stellabymoonlight, by Mailbu Moon, a daughter of stakes winner Five Star Dream.

Hip No. 11, a yearling daughter of Exaggerator consigned by Stuart Morris, Agent, was sold to de Meric Stables, Agent, for $100,000. The bay filly, a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Catalina Red, is out of stakes placed Lovely Dream, by Freud.

Team Casse, Agent, went to $90,000 for Hip No. 40, a yearling daughter of Tapiture consigned by Abbie Road Farm (Lisa McGreevy), Agent. A half sister to stakes winner Appealing Spring, the gray or roan filly is out of Pretty Springs, by Wekiva Springs.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 85 horses sold for a total of $1,913,500 compared with 106 horses grossing $1,777,100 in 2019. The average price was $22,512, up 34.3% compared with $16,765 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000, up 8.3% from $12,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 37.9%; it was 26.9% last year.

The Horses of Racing Age Session sale topper was Hip No. 219, Summer At the Spa, a 3-year-old daughter of Summer Front consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, sold to Ralph M. Evans for $125,000. The dark bay or brown filly, winner of her only start, is out of Myself, by Giant’s Causeway, a daughter of graded stakes placed Obsequious.

Jeremiah O’Dwyer went to $100,000 for Hip No. 327, First Law, a 3-year-old son of Constitution whose three eighths in :32 3/5 was co-fastest at Monday’s Under Tack Session. The chestnut colt is out of Miss Mary K, by Speightstown, a half sister to stakes winner Eleusis.

Hip No. 333, Call Home, a dark bay or brown 3-year-old colt by Dialed In consigned by Parrish Farms Agent, who turned in an Under Tack three eighths in :33 flat, went to Gerald J. Hart for $75,000. He’s out of Pure Refinement, by In Excess (IRE), a half sister to grade one stakes winner Pure As Gold.

Joe Brocklebank, Agent for Centennial Farms LLC, went to $74,000 for Hip No. 266, A Girl Named Jac, consigned by Alliance Sales Agency, Agent. The 3-year-old bay filly by Point of Entry, is out of War Flower, by War Front, from the family of graded stakes winning OBS graduate In Franks Honor.

Hip No. 226, Grudge, a 3-year-old chestnut filly by Palace Malice consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent, was purchased by Ronald Brown for $65,000. A maiden special weight winner at Gulfstream in her last start, she’s out of Pilamaya, by Grand Slam, a full sister to graded stakes winner Grand Refer.

Hip No. 250, Desoto’s War, a 3-year-old son of Warrior’s Reward who breezed three eighths in :33 2/5 at the Under Tack Show, was sold to Emerald Sales, Agent for L. Byers Boyd for $65,000. The bay colt, consigned by Hemingway Racing and Training Stables LLC, Agent, is out of Smarty Bird, by Smart Strike, a half sister to grade one stakes placed Mountain Town.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 67 horses grossed $1,314,400 compared with 64 selling for a total of $1,194,000 in 2019. The average was $19,618, up 5.2% from $18,656 a year ago, while the median price was $11,000, up 22.2% compared to $9,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 15.2%; it was 15.8% in 2019.

The Winter Mixed Sale continues Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Hip No.’s 401 – 710 in the Open Session.
