Anytime I get to talk horse racing with Mike Smith it is a privilege. He is as knowledgeable as he is talented in the saddle. I recently had the opportunity to talk a little Pegasus strategy with Mike.
Do you think the draw benefitted or hurt California Chrome or Arrogate more?
I don’t think California Chrome drawing outside will hurt him that much. He’s very quick, and I expect him to come out running. There is not that much speed directly inside him, so he should be able to get over. He’s very talented. From the rail I am going to come out and be aggressive. I expect us both to be close to the pace, but you never know how things unfold and I’ll be ready to see what happens.
Do you think the mile and an eighth will hurt Arrogate’s chances?
I wish it was a mile and a quarter, but I think we will be okay at a mile and an eighth. You never really know, but if I get a good jump out of the gate we should be alright. My horse has a long powerful stride. I’ll have to try and get him going a little earlier or maybe even be closer to the lead, but he’s got so much ability I think I’ll be able to.
