Breeders’ Cup Release
DEL MAR, Calif. – West Point Thoroughbreds, Robert C. Gardiner and Spartan Equine Racing et al.’s Super Corredora ($19.60) rocketed to the front shortly after the start and held off a late bid from favored Explora to post a three-quarter-length victory in the 42nd running of the $2 million NetJets Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) Friday afternoon at Del Mar for 2-year-old fillies.
Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Hector Berrios, Super Corredora completed the 1 1/16 miles over a fast track in 1:43.71. It is the first Breeders’ Cup victory for Berrios and the fourth for Sadler.
Super Corredora outraced Explora and La Wally to the first turn and set fractions of :22.42 and :45.63 while maintaining a clear advantage. She maintained that edge into the stretch and had enough to hold off Explora with Percy’s Bar another 3 lengths back in third.
Making her stakes debut, Super Corredora is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Gun Runner out of the Super Saver mare Super Simple. The victory was worth $1,040,000 and improved Super Corredora’s earnings to $1,093,600 with a record of 4-2-1-0.
Quotes:
Winning trainer John Sadler (Super Corredora) – “She’s a filly we had really high hopes for. We always expected she could get two turns. She has a beautiful stride. It didn’t go smooth this summer. The first time she drew the one and didn’t really get it. She improved in the second and she’s improved every time. We’re in our own backyard. We weren’t sure we were going to run but we trained her a little bit here and she trained well and here we are.”

Winning jockey Hector Berrios (Super Corredora) – First Breeders’ Cup win for Berrios – “(John Sadler) told me to be confident. And now I’m very excited for this moment. I want to say thank you to John and the owner. It’s an amazing day for me today, for my career. I’ve had three wins. I have one more [ride coming up]. It’s just amazing.”
Second-place trainer Bob Baffert (Explora) – “My filly broke well, and I thought she would be on the lead but (jockey Hector) Berrios on winner Super Corredora) got aggressive and got the good spot and that’s the way it went. She tried hard. Jill’s filly (Bottle of Rouge, owned by his wife) just struggled back there and didn’t run her race. It’s official. It’s over.”
Second-place jockey Juan Hernandez (Explora) – “I had a good trip and was sitting in a good spot at the top of the stretch but the (winner) did not come back to me. My filly ran well though.”
Third-place trainer Ben Colebrook (Percy’s Bar) – “She hit the rail and got knocked in there. She’s a tough, talented filly, to come back from getting knocked into the rail down there. I don’t know what it would have meant, but you never want that to happen. Wish we would have had a cleaner trip, but what are you going to do.”
Third-place jockey Luan Machado (Percy’s Bar) – “She was never really comfortable and it was a lot of pressure on her the whole way around there. I’m very proud of the way she did it out there. She’s a game filly.”
