HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Starship Impulsive earned her fourth consecutive visit to Gulfstream Park’s winner’s circle Saturday while scoring a gutsy triumph in the $70,000 Frolic’s Revenge.
Facing older rivals for the first time in the mile overnight handicap for fillies and mares on turf, Starship Stables’ 3-year-old daughter of Improbable achieved her fourth straight win since being sent around two turn. The streak has also coincided with a jockey change to Leonel Reyes.
“I’m very proud of her,” trainer Steve Dwoskin said.
Sent to post as the 4-5 favorite, Starship Impulsive, who had won her last three races on the front end, settled in second behind pacesetter Lets Go Koko, who showed the way past fractions of 23.59 and 45.85 (seconds) for the first half mile on a firm turn course. Lets Go Koko, who was also riding a three-race winning streak, continued to lead entering the turn into the homestretch with Starship Impulsive and Ashima closing in. Starship Impulsive and Ashima entered the stretch side-by-side as Lets Go Koko weakened and fought tooth and nail to the wire with the Dwoskin trainee prevailing by a head at the finish.
“She was very game. She did what the jock wanted her to do. He rode her perfectly,” Dwoskin said.
Starship Impulsive, who won an optional claiming allowance, the Honey Ryder and the Martha Washington in her three prior starts, ran a mile in 1:33.05. Ashima, the 9-2 third betting choice, finished 1 ½ lengths ahead of third-place finisher Charlie’s Wish. Lets Go Koko, the 7-2 second choice, finished another 3 ½ lengths back in fourth.
Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $125,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $125,000 Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Saturday for the fifth racing day following an Aug. 3 mandatory payout.
Sunday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10, featuring a 5 ½-furlong maiden special weight race for Florida-bred juvenile fillies in Race 7 and a mile starter allowance for 3-year-olds and up on turf in Race 8.
Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Mystical has been installed as an even-money favorite in her debut in Race 7. The Arindel homebred filly is out of a daughter of Dat You Miz Blue, a popular graded-stakes winner with 14 victories during a career spanning 1999-2002. Michael Yates-trained Finding Strength brings race experience into the race, having finished a promising third in her recent debut.
The Race 8 feature, which drew an 11-horse field with a 7-2 morning-line favorite, should be a challenge Rainbow 6 bettors. Rohan Crichton-trained Carentan got the nod from the linemaker off a solid second-place finish under Sunday’s conditions.
In the Rainbow 6, the jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
