Sierra Leone conquers the Whitney (Angelo Lieto)

Past The Wire Staff

Sierra Leone continued to cement his status as one of the premier horses in training with a thrilling victory in the prestigious Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga, adding yet another major trophy to an already stellar resume that includes a win in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. In a race loaded with talent, Sierra Leone proved once again why he’s considered the class of the older horse division, surging late to overtake a determined Highland Falls in the final strides.

The Whitney featured a historic matchup, marking the first time two Breeders’ Cup Classic winners — Sierra Leone and White Abarrio — faced off in the same race. Fierceness, the immensely talented 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion, also added intrigue to the field, but neither he nor White Abarrio could match Sierra Leone’s relentless finish. With his trademark closing kick and impeccable timing, he rallied from off the pace, showcasing the same grit and stamina that earned him last year’s Classic crown.

For those following Past the Wire TV, Sierra Leone’s victory was a profitable one — he was the featured Sure Bet Coffee Play of the Day, another sharp call from John Stettin and the team that’s been dialed into the summer stakes action. His Whitney win also carries greater significance, as the race serves as a Win and You’re In qualifier for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic, giving him an automatic berth as he gears up to defend his title later this year.

Runner-up Highland Falls ran a valiant race, making a bold move on the far turn and briefly taking command in mid-stretch. But in the end, he could not hold off the hard-charging Sierra Leone, who once again proved he’s a cut above the rest when the real running begins. With each start, Sierra Leone not only adds to his growing legacy but also reaffirms his place in the conversation as one of the best of today.

Really enjoy the show
