Should a racing couple be coupled, that is the question

January 7, 2021

We all want more betting interests. We get that. Coupling while reducing entries, does level the playing field and also takes away trainer intent guesswork. Now in light of the recent marriage of Trevor McCarthy and Katie Davis, and the NYS Gaming Commission’s decision to enforce an old rule about married jockeys being coupled the conflict of interest issue has new life and meaning.

On this episode of Past the Wire’s Gate to Wire podcast, brought to you by Spendthrift Farm, we talk with Attorney Bill Gottimer who wrote the commission seeking clarification of the rule, and offered suggestions so as not to hurt the riders ability to get mounts. It is a difficult subject with many viewpoints.
We think you will enjoy this episode as we explore the legalities, potential solutions and selective enforcement.
