Legendary trainer of John Henry achieves 2,590th career win

ARCADIA, Calif. — Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally’s homebred She’s Our Charm proved tough on the lead Friday at Santa Anita, as she prevailed by one length in the day’s $59,000 allowance feature. Bred by McAnally and his wife Debbie and owned by the Deborah McAnally Trust, She’s Our Charm got a flat mile on turf in 1:34.01 under Juan Hernandez.

Quick from the blocks, She’s Our Charm had a 2 ¼ length advantage over Tapwater as the field rounded the Club House turn and headed up the backstretch. With Hernandez sitting chilly, She’s Our Charm held a one length lead over both Tapwater and Heather’s Grey at the top of the lane and from there, she held sway while holding off the late charge of runner-up Quick at the wire.

“I’ve always thought she was a nice filly,” said McAnally, 88, who bagged his 2,590th career win. “She’s like a greyhound and she just keeps on going.  As she continues to learn how to rate, I think she’ll go longer.”

Off a bit slowly in her most recent start, a second place finish in a one mile turf allowance at Del Mar Sept. 5, She’s Our Charm, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Candy Ride, was the third choice in a field of six fillies and mares and paid $8.00, $4.40 and $3.20.

“She broke better today, last time she got a little hot in the post parade,” said Hernandez. “She relaxed better today and she was very comfortable.”

Out of McAnally’s Empire Maker mare Charm the Maker, She’s Our Charm now has three wins from seven starts and with the winner’s share of $35,400, she has earnings of $129,240.

English-bred Quick, last after the first half mile under Umberto Rispoli, fired big through the lane but it wasn’t enough as she outran Heathers Grey by a half length. The 2-1 favorite, Quick paid $3.00 and $2.60.

Ridden by Aaron Gryder, Heathers Grey was off at 7-1 and paid $3.40 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.19, 46.65, 1:10.38 and 1:22.24.
