HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Out of an abundance of caution for horses, horsemen and fans, the balance of Friday’s live racing program at Gulfstream Park was cancelled following a powerful thunderstorm that swept through the area bringing heavy rain and lightning.

The decision was made following a lengthy delay prior to Race 6 of a scheduled nine-race program, after consultation with riders, track maintenance and management.

Daily double and Pick 3 wagering that ended with Race 6 were designated as ‘all’ races. The 20-cent Rainbow 6 and 50-cent Late Pick 5 wagers that began in Races 4 and 5, respectively, were refunded.

Live action resumes Saturday with an 11-race program starting at 12:40 p.m.

Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Carryover Jackpot Pool Estimated at $150,000

Saturday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $150,000 at Gulfstream Park.

Saturday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, featuring a pair of maiden special weight events for 2-year-olds in Races 6 and 8.

A field of eight juveniles has been assembled for Race 6, a five-furlong turf dash in which Jose D’Angelo-trained Uncle Aldo will return from a promising third-place finish following a slow start in his recent debut. Patrick Biancone-trained Thunder Zeus, a son of Caravaggio; Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Not Now Nick, a son of Mendelsohn; and Carlos David-trained Law of One, a son of Tiz the Law, are scheduled to start for the first time.

Joseph-trained Strategic Reserve is slated to debut as the 4-5 morning-line favorite in Race 8, which will be run at six furlongs on the main track. Strategic Reserve, a son of Munnings who sold for $435,000 at the Keeneland September sale, has been working forwardly for his debut.

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be held Sunday, when the jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $1 million should the popular multi-race wager go unsolved Saturday.

The Rainbow 6 carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager’s six-race sequence.
