Serpentine Goes “Gate to Wire”in the Investec Derby

July 4, 2020

The Aidan O’ Brien trained Serpentine made the Investec Derby his own going Gate to Wire under E. J. McNanara. Jockey Emmet McNamara had this to say:

“I think I got a little bit of a freebie.”

Serpentine

Serpentine made the running from gate to wire and no one could get close. Kameko attempted to close, English King attempted to close, but they were all helpless. I suspect a few jockeys will be kicking themselves for letting Serpentine get so far clear.

Serpentine gave Aidan O’Brien a record-breaking eighth Derby success, at odds of 25-1. He capped the Oaks Derby double for the trainer, who took the Oaks earlier with Love.

50-1 shot Khalifa Sat was second with 66-1 shot Amhran Na Bhfiann in third. Kameko and Oisin Murphy and English King under Frankie Dettori were just too far back off the pace and could not make up any meaningful ground.

@jonathanstettin Your writing skills compare to Red Smith and Joe Hirsch- Just a wonderful read
