DEL MAR, Calif.—Jay Bligh’s Roselee May benefitted from a well-timed ride by Umberto Rispoli on the turf at Del Mar Thursday and came away a half-length winner of the allowance feature on the card on a cool and cloudy afternoon at the shore.
The 4-year-old filly by Blame ran the demanding mile and three eighths on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course in 2:16.29 and returned $16.60 for $2 to her backers in the mid-week crowd. Trainer Mike McCarthy put the saddle on the bay who was winning her fourth race in her 14th start.
Finishing second in the marathon was CYBT, Aldabbagh or Nentwig, et al’s Thebestisyettobe, who had one length on Michael Enright’s Eternal Reign. Eight horses in all ran in the feature.
The $48,600 winner’s share of the $82,200 purse pushed Roselee May’s earnings to $207,866. She was bred in Kentucky by her owner. She’s raced exclusively in the west since starting her career in the Kentucky. This was her first time going “long” and she handled the distance with aplomb.
Racing resumes at Del Mar Friday when first post for the afternoon is at 3 p.m.
