I thought Reach the World was as good as any of the three year olds this year. I thought he could break the Apollo jinx, and when he didn’t make The Kentucky Derby I thought he was a top contender for The Belmont. It was a heartbreaking loss when he broke his leg in a training run at Santa Anita and had to be put down..
I had the privilege of interviewing Bob Baffert the day Reach the World broke his maiden and I asked him about the colt who was first starting to develop. It made this news particularly sad for me, as I really thought a lot of this horse. They are all sad, and it is the worst part of the game, but when you get a little more attached than usual it makes the sting a little worse.
