Mrs. Gambolini Tops Field for Portofino Bay Handicap

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $200,000 Saturday at Gulfstream Park one day before Sunday’s scheduled mandatory payout.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the sixth racing day following a mandatory payout that yielded multiple $47,670 payoffs.

Saturday’s Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-11, featuring the $70,000 Portofino Bay Handicap in Race 8.

Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Mrs. Gambolini, the 7-5 morning-line favorite, will carry highweight of 124 pounds, including leading rider Edgard Zayas, in the 5 ½-furlong test for fillies and mares on Tapeta. The 4-year-old daughter of More Than Ready, who captured the April 27 Golden Beach Handicap on turf in her 2025 debut, will seek to make amends for a narrow loss to Tiffany Gold on turf in the May 25 Lady’s Island. Tiffany Gold was entered but will not start in the Portofino Bay.

Trainer Victor Barboza Jr. will be represented by Great Venezuela, who will be in receipt of one pound from Mrs. Gambolini. Rated second on the morning-line at 8-5, the 4-year-old daughter of Neolithic, who has been in the money in all of her 12 career starts, has excelled on Tapeta, having won five of six starts on the all-weather surface along with a second-place finish.

The Rainbow 6 carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. On mandatory-payout days, the entire Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the wager’s six-race sequence.

Should the Rainbow 6 continue to go unsolved through Saturday’s program, the jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $1.25 million Sunday.
