New Mexico– Quarter horse trainer Bobby Martinez recently was handed down several suspensions according to ARCI that suspend him until 2054. The suspensions in question (8) in total on individual horses dating back to July of 2019 when out of competition testing was performed and resulted in positives of “Osterine” in each horses blood samples. Osterine has no therapeutic benefits in race horses and is only used as a performance enhancing drug. All eight horses in question were started in the Rainbow Futurity Trials and were all owned by Jose Fabian Hernandez.
Enobosarm, also known as ostarine, is an investigational selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) developed by GTx, Inc. for the treatment of conditions such as muscle wasting and osteoporosis, formerly under development by Merck & Company. SARMs including enobosarm may be and have been used by athletes to assist in training and increase physical stamina and fitness, potentially producing effects similar to anabolic steroids.
For this reason, SARMs were banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency in January 2008, despite no drugs from this class yet being in clinical use, and blood tests for all known SARMs have been developed. There are a variety of known cases of doping in sports with enobosarm by professional athletes.
The total fines associated with all eight of these Class 1 doping infractions range from $20,000.00 to $70,000.00 each and total a whopping $480,000.00. It’s safe to say that the New Mexico Racing Commission and the board of stewards were sending a clear message to anyone else considering the same practices while retiring Mr. Martinez effective immediately. There is no place for doping horses in any portion of racing regardless if it is quarterhorse or thoroughbred. It is unfair to others who compete against you as an owner or a trainer and it is unfair to the bettors who unknowingly wager on these events.
