HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – It was not a problem for BC Racing LLC’s Prevent when the $70,000 Mambo Meister was taken off the turf Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park. Moved to Tapeta due to overnight rain, the 4-year-old son of Neolithic took the lead around the first turn under a confident ride by Emisael Jaramillo to win the mile and 70-yard event by 1 ½ lengths.
Trained by Carlos David, Prevent, who covered the distance in 1:39.46, has won five of 12 starts across the Tapeta. Once they took the lead entering the backstretch, Prevent and Jaramillo led the way past fractions of :24.35, :47.76 and 1:11.38.
“We wanted to be on the lead, but we also knew there was other speed inside,” Jaramillo said. “I broke close to the lead, and after the first turn I sensed the opening fraction wasn’t fast, so I let him take the lead. Then I rationed his speed.”
After returning from a four-month break to win the Soldier’s Dancer at Gulfstream, Prevent finished fifth, beaten eight lengths, in a turf allowance event at Saratoga Aug. 1.
“We took him up north after he won here. We took a chance in a Saratoga allowance,” David said. “Those races come up tough, like stakes. He didn’t have a great start. We had him in a stakes at Monmouth Park but we decided to bring him back home. He loves the Tapeta, and we felt this was an easier spot. He handles grass well, but he’s very competitive on Tapeta.
Prevent returned $7.20. Goes the Clown was second and Stroke of Midnight third.
The Mambo Meister is named after a son of King Cugat trained by Phil Gleaves and co-owned by breeder and owner Chris Pallas. Mambo Meister won 11 of 42 races including the Miami Mile (G3), Memorial Day Handicap (G3) and Spend a Buck (G3) and was second in the Fourstardave (G2) at Saratoga.
Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $150,000
The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be estimated at $150,000 for Sunday’s 10-race card at Gulfstream Park.
First race post time is 12:50 p.m.
The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for five consecutive racing days following multiple mandatory payouts of $206.30 Aug. 24.
In the Rainbow 6, the carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
Sunday’s Rainbow 6 spans Races 5-10, highlighted by a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds sprinting six furlongs on the main track in Race 6. The 7-5 program favorite is Malbec, a $150,000 son of Violence that has shown improvement in each of his first three starts and is coming off a runner-up finish as the favorite in a similar spot going seven furlongs Aug. 9 on a sloppy course. Jose D’Angelo-trained stablemate and first-time starter Jamalamadingdong was scratched from Saturday’s $100,000 FSS Dr. Fager for this spot.
Race 8 is a six-furlong maiden special weight for 3-year-olds and up that drew nine horses led by 3-year-old Skellig Michael, breaking from the far outside and exiting a second as the favorite in a 6 ½-furlong maiden event against elders July 12. Beijing Boss attempts to break though after one second and three thirds in five prior starts.
