HALLANDALE BEACH, FL – Jockey Luis Saez nursed Mean Mary through comfortable fractions on the lead before pulling away in the stretch for a 5-length victory in the $200,000 La Prevoyante Stakes (G3).
The win for the 4-year-old filly was her first in a stakes. Trained by Graham Motion for owner Alex G. Campbell Jr., Mean Mary was making only her fifth career start.
Saez turned in a smart ride, allowing the front-running filly to coast through slow early fractions while unchallenged throughout in the 1 1/2-mile turf stakes. Lady Paname, the 6-5 favorite, was second, with Touriga finishing third.
Mean Mary (5-2) completed the trip in 2:28.36.
Winning trainer Graham Motion (Mean Mary): ““Luis (Saez) came into the paddock and he said he was going to ask her away from the gate. I said, ‘Luis, you’re not going to have to ask her, she’s going to be on the lead.’ He did a beautiful job and he slowed it right down. When they went :17, I was feeling pretty good because I didn’t think the distance would be a problem.”
Winning jockey Luis Saez (Mean Mary): “The plan was to break and I know we have the speed. She just broke by herself right there and she was comfortable. When we came to the stretch she just put them away. She just took off.”
“I look behind me at the three-eighths [pole] and there were two or three guys I saw right there and I still felt comfortable because I had a lot of horse. I knew she was going to take off when I came to the stretch. She switched leads and she made it look easy.”
