Maryland Horse Breeders Association Release

For the second week in a row, Mindframe sits atop the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s Top Thoroughbred Poll. Voting is conducted by national media and covers racing performances of U.S. horses competing around the world.

Bred by the late Larry Johnson, 4-year-old Mindframe is undefeated this year in three starts, all graded stakes. The son of Constitution, owned by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stables LLC, became a Grade 1 winner in May with a dramatic finish, in a four-horse photo, in the Churchill Downs Stakes while sprinting, and most recently won the mile and an eighth Stephen Foster Stakes-G1 over one of the best fields assembled this year, finishing ahead of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic-G1 winner Sierra Leone, a Kentucky Derby-G1 winner (Mystik Dan) and Dubai World Cup-G1 winner (Hit Show). His final time of 1:47.48 was just ticks off Churchill Downs’ track record.

Mindframe comes from a long line of Maryland-bred mares through Johnson’s first broodmare, Maryland-bred Ran’s Chick, a daughter of Maryland sire The Big Boss born in 1976. The colt’s third dam, stakes winner Special Kell, was by Bonita Farm sire Parfaitement. She was bred to Eclipse Award-winning Maryland-bred champion Star de Naskra and produced Star Kell, the dam of four stakes performers. Star Kell’s final foal, stakes winner Walk of Stars (by Street Sense), delivered Mindframe as her fourth foal at Dance Forth Farm in Chestertown on the Eastern Shore on May 13, 2021.
