The race for the Eclipse award for best apprentice has come right down to the wire.
Luis Ocasio leads the nation in money won and overall wins as a bug rider, which many years would assure him the Eclipse. This year he is up against Lane Luzzi, who has also had a fine year, and rides in South Florida, primarily at Gulfstream Park, which has a bigger following and presence than the Mid-Atlantic circuit where Luis rides.
Lane is also the son of long time New York journeyman Mike Luzzi, which can’t hurt him politically. It’s a tough race, and both riders have earned their due consideration. With the odds somewhat against him, Luis Ocasio has proved a worthy adversary, and this “should be” a close and tough vote.
