Daughter of Badge of Silver Earns Automatic Berth into Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Del Mar

Breeders’ Cup Release

LIMA, Peru – Stud Amistad’s La Kika (PER) outlasted Jet Set’s Mathilde (PER) in a furious stretch drive to win Sunday’s Gran Premio Pamplono at Hipodromo de Monterrico. With this victory, La Kika earned an automatic starting position into the $2 million Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 93 stakes races in 15 countries whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, scheduled to be held Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, California.

La Kika (PER),the 2024 Peruvian Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old filly, trained by Luis Quimper and ridden by Diego Lozano, completed the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.86, and registered her sixth win in 11 starts, and her third Group 1 triumph.

In a field of 14 fillies and mares with one scratch, Fidenzia (PER) broke on top and set the early pace, while Mathilde sat in fourth and La Kika raced toward the rear. Approaching the stretch, Mathilde and La Kika came off the rail, with the latter closing the widest of all. To their inside, Boudica (PER) took a slight lead over Queen Sienna (PER) with two furlongs remaining, but Mathilde and La Kika were moving with the greatest momentum. Battling side to side inside the final sixteenth of a mile, La Kika found one more surge and prevailed by a half-length. Queen Siena finished third, followed by Boudica in fourth.

Prior to two off the board finishes this year, in 2024 La Kika scored Group 1 wins – in the Sept. 15 Clasico Polla de Potrancas at 1 mile on dirt and in the Dec. 15 Gran Premio Nacional Augusto B. Leguia (G1) going 1 3/4 miles on turf.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders’ Cup will pay the entry fees for La Kika to start in the 1 3/8-mile Maker’s Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Breeders’ Cup will also provide a travel allowance for all starters based outside of California to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by the pre-entry deadline of Oct. 20 in order to receive the rewards.
