Journalism Tops List of 18 Nominations for G1 Haskell

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Preakness and Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism heads a list of 18 nominations to the Grade 1 NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday, July 19, it was announced today.

The $1 million Haskell, to be contested for the 58th time, carries with it automatic entry for the winner into the Breeders’ Cup Classic as part of the “Win and You’re In” challenge series.

Journalism, second in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, has never been worse than second in six graded stakes tries. The Kentucky-bred son of Curlin, an $825,000 yearling purchase, has already banked $3,198,880 during his eight-race career.

Trained by Mike McCarthy, he is owned by the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Robert V. LaPenta, Elayne Stables Five, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith.

Gosger, second in the Preakness, Blue Grass winner Burnham Square, Ohio Derby winner Mo Plex and NYRA Bets Pegasus Stakes winner Bracket Buster are among the nominees.

Trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Haskell a record nine times, has nominated Goal Oriented.

The mile and an eighth Haskell headlines a card that features the $600,000 Grade 2 United Nations; the $500,000 Grade 3 Molly Pitcher; the $400,000 Grade 3 Monmouth Cup and the $300,000 Grade 3 WinStar Matchmaker Stakes.

Last year’s Haskell Stakes Day card produced an all-sources record handle of $21.7 million. The crowd of 38,976 was the largest since 2015.
