LAUREL, Md.— In My Memories was the lone three-time winner entering Sunday’s featured eighth race at Laurel, a first-level allowance with an optional claiming range of $62,500 to $50,000 for 3-year-old fillies at 5 ½ furlongs
After a prime outside tracking trip under jockey Arnaldo Bocachica, In My Memories posed for another winner’s circle photo.
“Having the outside [post position] really helped me because she likes to be either on the lead or in the clear,” Bocachica said. “The three [pacesetters] broke sharp, and I saw that they all wanted the lead, so I was able to sit right behind them real comfortable. When I asked her, she responded very well.”
In My Memories broke inward, tightening up two rivals to her inside. Bocachica soon straightened her out to settle outside favored Shkhara Fire, Margarita Daze and Tuned to the Moon through an opening quarter in 22.41 seconds.
Tuned to the Moon grabbed a short lead in the upper stretch, but In My Memories lengthened her stride and rallied past the leaders to win by 2 ¾ lengths in 1:05.11 over the fast track.
Shkhara Fire re-rallied for second, a neck ahead of Seaside Road. Tuned to the Moon, Nancy Mary, Baytown Butterfly, and Margarita Daze completed the order of finish. Princess of Omaha scratched.
In My Memories returned $9.20 as the third betting choice. Seaside Road’s rider, Jevian Toledo, claimed foul against the winner for interference leaving the starting gate, but the stewards disallowed his objection.
Bred in Kentucky by Jason Hall, Mike Riordan & Steinmetz Equine Holdings, In My Memories is by Jimmy Creed out of seven-time winner Be a Lady, a full sister to multiple stakes-winner Wake Up Nick.
Purchased for $40,000 at public auction last year, In My Memories won two of five starts for trainer Andrew Simoff before being claimed by trainer Anthony Farrior and owner James Wolf for $40,000 out of a second-place finish at Laurel on December 1.
In her final start at two, In My Memories finished fifth when entered for the $62,500 claiming option.
Receiving Lasix for the first time, In My Memories notched a $62,500 optional claimer on January 17. She failed to win at odds of 5-2 or less in her next five outings, but Farrior mentioned the addition of glue-on shoes before her most recent start, a second-place effort at Pimlico on May 11, have aided the filly’s development.
“This filly, we were really happy with her the last couple of weeks,” Farrior said. “Her feet were a whole lot better.”
“Last time, she was pushed [on the lead] in her race, and she didn’t finish, so today, the plan was not to go too fast early and make her finish better. I felt like I had a lot of horse,” Bocachica added.
Woodrow Bright wins $1,000 in Saturday’s “Charm City Challenge”
Woodrow Bright became the second $1,000 winner in the “Charm City Challenge” when he was the only contestant to correctly select the winners of the final five races on Saturday’s Laurel Park program.
The “Charm City Challenge” is a free online handicapping contest where players make selections on the last five races of each Laurel Park card during this meet. If a player picks the winner in all five legs on a single day, that contestant wins or shares the $1,000 bonus.
Based on the popular “Pick and Pray” handicapping tournaments, the “Charm City Challenge” offers cash prizes to the contestant with the highest cumulative bankroll for the entire Laurel Park meeting.
Joyce Adamson was the first $1,000 winner when she picked the Late “Value Pick 5” cold on Opening Day of the Laurel Park summer meet.
