Are you engaged in the Game of Silks yet? There are still a significant number of horses ready and waiting to be minted that have promising careers ahead of them (which means rewards for their lucky owners).
In keeping with the strange meet that we’ve had so far this summer at Saratoga, Race 5 on Wednesday – which was designated as the Silks Race of the Week – was cancelled due to a power outage at the track and surrounding areas. However, do not fear, there were many other great races last week and I’ll cover one of them for you below. Also, I’ve recapped many of the larger races – those with a purse over $50,000 – in the chart at the bottom. Again, please keep in mind that winning Silks’ owners also get rewarded for in-the-money finishes and additionally for many other races not shown below.
Del Mar hosted the $200,000 Best Pal Stakes (G3) yesterday. One of the two horses that Bob Baffert had entered – Muth (owned in the Game of Silks by Alpha Racing) – went off as the 3/2 favorite. However, it was Baffert’s ‘other colt’ that turned out to be the star of the show. Off at odds of 9/5 and ridden expertly by Flavien Prat, Prince of Monaco stalked the leading pair which included Muth, but then made a tremendously powerful run late on the turn and gained a short lead at the head of the lane before rocketing away to score by 4 ¼ lengths on the wire. He earned an amazing 102 Equibase Speed Figure for his efforts (1:09.19 for the six furlongs!) and stamped his name as an early contender for next year’s Kentucky Derby. Who is the fortunate owner of this monster in the Game of Silks, you ask? It is 5%-10% Charity Farms. Even though Vshakerfarms had three wins this past week in $50,000+ races and Gibbs Racing had two scores, I’m giving my coveted Game of Silks Owner of the Week to 5%-10% Charity Farms – congratulations!
