As you can see from the list below, the number of winners in the Game of Silks of races with a purse of $50,000 and above this past week was long. And please keep in mind, these are just the ‘high buck’ races and we are only listing the winners. Silks also pays out rewards to owners of horses that finish in second, third and fourth place. The $120,000 Tepin Stakes was run at Aqueduct on Friday, 11/17/23 and six fillies loaded into the gate to do battle. Kendrick Carmouche got Awesome Czech out fast and took the lead into the first turn of this two-turn, one mile event on the grass. That pair set reasonable fractions of 24.06 and 48.99 seconds as they led through the half mile mark while being stalked by Javier Castellano and Gold Lightning, with the 6/5 favorite, Memorialize a few lengths back in third. The field rounded the final turn and headed into the stretch with the same three fillies leading the pack, when Manny Franco roused Memorialize with a furlong to run. That gal dug in and just got up at the wire to score by a neck over the 15/1 shot, Awesome Czech.
Memorialize, sired by Karakontie and trained by Graham Motion, paid $4.40. Her final time was swift – 1:36.57 – which equated to an 86 Equibase Speed Figure. For this win (and for their two other $50,000+ wins for the week), I am presenting my Game of Silks’ Owner of the Week award to Alpha Dragon Lair. Congratulations on the fantastic performances!
