Back to the racing action from last week, because we had plenty of terrific things going on inside the game last week, too. Race 6 at Keeneland last Saturday was a dandy and one that you may want to remember. This race marked the third lifetime outing for the 2023 Kentucky Derby Winner’s (Mage) full brother – Dornoch. Trained by Danny Gargan and ridden by Luis Saez, Dornoch went off as the odds-on favorite at 1 to 2. He broke cleanly and shortly after the start of this 1 1/16th mile dirt race, he and Saez took the lead.
Traveling through fractions of 23.50, 47.70 and 1:12.93, this colt looked strong, but was tracked closely by Brian Hernandez, Jr. and Lat Long. With about 3/16th of a mile to go, Dornoch put it into another gear and sailed on to hit the wire first, 6 ½ lengths ahead of his nearest competitor. The tote board eked out $3.12 for winning $2 Win tickets and his final time was clocked in a brisk 1:45.00 flat, which worked out to a dynamite 101 Equibase Speed Figure. Might that race just have put his name forward as an early contender for the 2024 Derby? I think so.
A big congrats goes out to his owner in the Game of Silks – Lighthouse Racing and for this fantastic victory, I’m also awarding them with my prestigious Game of Silks Owner of the Week award. Honorable mention goes to Alpha Dragon Lair who racked up two more wins in races that carried a purse of $50,000+.
