TORONTO, October 1, 2020 – Ten starters, including three-year-old Forester’s Turn, take to the Toronto oval Inner Turf for the $150,000 Vice Regent Stakes, Sunday at Woodbine.
Bred and owned by Rolph Davis, Forester’s Turn, a son of Old Forester, will contest his third straight added-money event, after winning the Greenwood Stakes, run over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course on August 1, and a third-place finish in the King Corrie Stakes, run over the Inner Turf, on September 12.
This time he’ll travel five panels on the Inner Turf in a race for three-year-olds & up, bred in Ontario.
“He’s taking on some older horses, and we didn’t have anywhere else to run him right now,” started trainer Robert Tiller. “He was third last time out [in the King Corrie] in a straight three-year-old race, and now, this is not an easy race. But he’s a hard-trying horse and he’s shown that time and again.”
Forester’s Turn sports a 5-0-2 record from eight starts.
The bay gelding won his first two starts, including his career bow last October 4 at Woodbine.
Bumped at the start of the 5 ½-furlong main track race, he recovered and went on to notch a 3 ½-length victory at odds of 3-1. Three weeks later, Forester’s Turn was back in the winner’s circle, after rallying for a neck triumph at six panels on the Tapeta.
He closed out his two-year-old campaign with a fifth-place finish to Dotted Line in the seven-furlong main track Frost King Stakes on November 9.
Forester’s Turn made his three-year-old debut a winning one on June 11, taking a six-furlong Tapeta race by a neck.
In five starts this year, he amasses a 3-0-2 mark.
“There are a few in there that are going to be fast, and I’d prefer to run this horse further, but we’re going to have to get lucky to win this,” offered Tiller. “That said, he is a hard trier and we love him.”
His rivals include City Boy, last year’s Nearctic Stakes (G2) champion, and graded stakes placed Sable Island.
Trained by Michael Keogh, City Boy, owned by the Estate of Gus Schickedanz and Donald Howard, comes into the Vice Regent off a third in the main track Vigil (G3) on September 5. The six-year-old son of City Zip has three wins, six seconds and three thirds in 19 starts.
Keogh won the 205 Vice Regent with Decew Falls, and the 2011 edition with Welloiledmachine.
Bred and owned by Box Arrow Farm, five-year-old Sable Island will be making his 2020 debut on Sunday.
Trained by Gord Colbourne, the son of Stormy Atlantic finished second in both the Vigil (G3) and Play the King (G2) last year. The dark bay has compiled a 4-3-1 record from 14 career starts.
The Toronto Cup is scheduled as the eighth race of 11 on Sunday’s 1 p.m. program.
