HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Gary Subratie, who has saddled more than 800 winners in Jamaica, notched his first U.S. win with Rogers Park ($5.40) in Race 6 on Saturday’s 11-race card at Gulfstream Park.

While he visited the winner’s circle for the first time in the U.S. Saturday, Subratie is hardly a stranger to South Florida racing.

“I grew up in Jamaica, but I got my license at Calder. I ran a couple races at Calder and went back to Jamaica,” said Subratie, who saddled three starters at Calder Race Course in 1997. “I said, ‘Let me go home and get things going.”

Rogers Park, who was claimed by owner James Trevor for $12,500 at Gulfstream May 18, was Subratie’s sixth starter since venturing to the U.S. this spring.

“It’s been a long time coming. My owners have been pushing me to come here,” he said after Rogers Park registered a half-length front-running victory under Yolber Torres in a 1 1/16-mile $12,500 claiming race on Tapeta. “I started my career here. I’m going to give it a shot. It’s never too late.”

Subratie, who also had four runners entered at Jamaica’s Caymanas Park Saturday, currently trains a stable of six at Gulfstream.

“I’ve always looked forward to racing at Gulfstream,” he said. “To get my first winner was: ‘Yes!’

“We’re trying to build. It’s not going to happen overnight,” he continued. “It’s coming along nicely, and I’m pleased and happy with the horses I have right now.”

Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Estimated at $125,000

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is expected to grow to an estimated $125,000 Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the third racing day following last Sunday’s mandatory payout, which yielded multiple $47,670 payoffs.

The $75,000 Musical Romance, a 6 ½-furlong handicap for fillies and mares, will headline the Rainbow 6 sequence (Races 5-10) in Race 7. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Haulin Ice, who most recently captured the Grade 3 Vagrancy at Aqueduct, will carry highweight of 126 pounds, between five and 12 pounds more than her six rivals. The 6-5 favorite, a candidate for the Grade 2 Honorable Miss July 20 at Saratoga, will likely be viewed as a ‘single’ for many Rainbow 6 bettors.

In the Rainbow 6, the carryover pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.
