WILMINGTON, Del. – Frederick Stonehedge’s Dean Delivers delivered the victory in the $125,250 Alapocas Run Stakes at Delaware Park today.
With Jaime Rodriguez, aboard the 5-year-old son of Cajun Breeze posted a 2 ½-length score and returned $7.80 as the second choice in the field of seven. Prince of Jericho, with Sheldon Russell, ran second. It was another 1 ¾-lengths farther back to Gordian Know, with Mychel Sanchez, in third.
After setting early fractions of :22.64 for the quarter mile and :46.02 for the half mile, the 8-5 favorite Super Chow, with Javier Castellano, faded to fourth.
The Alapocas Run is the second victory for the Florida-bred conditioned by Edward “Ned” Allard since being relocated from Florida.
“This horse tailed off a little bit down in Florida and the owners really felt moving up here was going to help and I think it certainly has,” said winning trainer Edward ‘Ned’ Allard. “We kind of thought our post position was going to allow us to do whatever he needed to do today. If there was no speed, he might have gone right to the lead, but with that other horse, he was able to sit just off of the lead. One thing about it, is you do not have to tell Jaime (Rodriguez) how to ride one. He gets to the winner’s circle a more than I do.”
Allard is considering going to Saratoga with Dean Delivers.
“He ran third in the AG Vanderbilt at Saratoga, so we may consider that again this season,” he said.
Dean Delivers raised his career record to seven wins from 23 starts with earnings of $637,660.
