The Doomben track is another popular horse racing track in Australia that attracts racers from around the country. If you plan to attend, bet, or simply support the racers, you must know what horse racers occur at Doomben and when they are scheduled for throughout the year. Below is all the information you need to follow your favourite Doomben racers.
Where is the Doomben track?
The Doomben Race Track is located in Brisbane, roughly 6km from the central business district. As one of Queensland’s premier race tracks, Doomben has a large, spacious design that includes 10,000 rooms and a beautiful viewing room made of glass all around it. This room is named after Doombens most famous race, the Doomben 10,000, a group one race. The 10,000 room is a deluxe room that sits at the top of the grandstand, giving those who can access it a perfect view of the entire Doomben track.
The Doomben track is a large oval with double sweeping turns at the east and west. Its overall distance is 1,715m, and the straight is 350 meters. Because of its beautiful gardens, Doomben is often referred to as the “Garden Racecourse.”
Doomben race distances and barriers
While the Doomben track distance is only around 1.7km long, a variety of race distances occur on it. Here’s a breakdown of how long some of the Doomben races are and where the barriers are:
- 1010m: These races usually start at the end of the back straight, offering horses a short 110-meter sprint before they need to make the home turn. For this distance, the inside barrier is normally better
- 1200m: Starting at the top of the back straight, 1200m races give sprinters 300m before they take a double sweeping turn onto the home straight. Again, horses that are placed on the inside barrier have the advantage
- 1350m: With the 1350m race, the start now moves to the chute at the top of the back straight. While runners do have an extra 450m at the beginning of the race to get a favourable position, those who take the inside still have the advantage
- 1650m: Things change a bit with this race; the start is after the home straight with the chute leading directly onto the first double-sweeping bend. Unfortunately, starting with the bend puts those who get the wide barrier draw at a disadvantage
- 2020m: One of the longer races on the course, the 2020m starts on the course proper in the home straight. This only awards those who get the inside position a slight advantage
- 2200m: The longest race on the track, the 2200m starts at the chute at the top of the home straight, awarding racers the whole distance of the home stretch to secure a good position. Because of this, the advantage given to those on the inside barrier is significantly reduce
