Horse Racing in Canada: 2024 Overview

May 13, 2024

Canada has a long history of horse racing and this sport is still very popular. In this post, we will briefly remind you of the most fascinating horse racing events across Canada and list the currently open and functioning horse racing tracks.

The Key Events

Canada’s top horse races are important even though, let’s be honest, fewer and fewer people are interested in this noble sport, at least as viewers. Races are part of the legacy of the sport’s long history, fierce competition, and previous importance in people’s lives. From the classic King’s Plate to the globally renowned Canadian International Stakes, each race adds to Canada’s cultural and athletic background.

The King’s Plate

The King’s Plate, Canada’s oldest horse race, with roots tracing back to 1860, is a cornerstone of Canadian racing history. Formerly known as The Queen’s Plate, it marks the start of the Canadian Triple Crown series, followed by the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Breeders’ Stakes. Taking place annually at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, it offers a C$1 million prize.

The Prince of Wales Stakes

After The King’s Plate comes The Prince of Wales Stakes, the second event in the Canadian Triple Crown. It is hosted every year at Fort Erie Racetrack in Ontario. Dating back to 1929, this race sees three-year-old thoroughbreds tackling 1 3/16 miles on the dirt track. The main prize in this race is C$400,000.

The Breeders’ Stakes

Last but not least in the Canadian Triple Crown is The Breeders’ Stakes. This one takes place at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack in Ontario. This race covers 1.5 miles on the turf track, with a prize of C$400,000. The first Breeders’ Stakes race was organized in 1889 and it has been an important part of horse racing in the country since then.

The Canadian International Stakes

Considered a top-tier horse race, the Canadian International Stakes is a yearly highlight at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack. Covering 1 1/2 miles on the turf, it’s open to both three-year-old and older thoroughbreds, offering a $1 million prize as the final reward. Since 1938, this race has attracted the most famous athletes and horses globally.

The Ricoh Woodbine Mile

Introduced in 1997, the Ricoh Woodbine Mile has risen to be a famous event as a top turf race in North America. Hosted at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack, this Grade 1 race accepts three-year-old and older thoroughbreds to compete for a $1 million prize over one mile on the turf. Known for its tough competition and challenging track, the Woodbine Mile is quite a view.

The Main Canadian Racetracks

Besides the main events that take place annually, you can check out racing competitions that happen on a regular basis (and more frequently obviously) on different race tracks across Canada. Moreover, if you are into some gambling, in addition to using free spins for $5 to play casino games you can also try your luck and make a bet or two on horses. In fact, you can make bets online on some platforms but it is even more fun to visit the actual racetrack and watch the races live.
